Since over three decades I study human emotions, applying different methods and paradigms, such as assessing expressive behavior and physiological changes associated with emotion. My approach is particularly informed by the notion that humans are an intensely social species. Thus, social aspects permeate all aspects of mind and behavior. How is the relationship between affective states and facial activity moderated by different social contexts? How are such expressions perceived? What is the role of dynamic aspects of facial activity for the attribution of emotions, attitudes, intentions? While these questions are basic in nature, they have direct applications, for example for human-machine interaction, the design of virtual or embodied agents, or the automatic analysis of facial behavior.

Currently, I am particularly interested in Affective Computing, Social Robotics and the role of emotions in cyberspace. This interest manifests itself particularly in the research of my group over the last years in three projects funded in the context of the 7th framework program of the EU: CYBEREMOTIONS: Collective emotions in Cyberspace ( 2009-2013. eCUTE: Education in cultural understanding technology-enhanced ( 2010-2013 - the goal of this project was to develop an innovative technological application to aid cultural understanding and empathy in children and young adults. How could empathy be measured to evaluate effects of such technological applications? EMOTE: EMbOdied-perceptive Tutors for Empathy-based learning ( 2012-2015 - the goal of this project was to design, develop, and evaluate a new generation of artificial embodied tutors that have perceptive capabilities to engage in empathic interactions with learners in a shared physical space. Since 2018 I am involved in a Horizon 2020 International Training Network ANIMATAS (Advancing intuitive human-machine interaction with human-like social capabilities for education in schools; end 2021).

I am a fellow of the Association for Psychological Science and the Society for Personality and Social Psychology. Recently, I have been president of the International Society for Research on Emotions (ISRE; 2013-2018).
